Dr Qi is an emerging lipid biologist. He commenced his research career at the Sydney Pharmacy School, University of Sydney, Australia. He then received research training at the Graduate School of Endocrinology, Kyoto University, Japan. Dr Qi obtained his Ph.D at the Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney, Australia in 2013. Most recently, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, University of NSW, Australia. Since 2017, Dr Qi has been heading the Lipid Cell Biology Laboratory at the Centenary Institute of Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology.

Dr Qi's current research is focused on the lipid metabolic causes of chronic human diseases, including diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, liver cancer and atherosclerosis. His research is regarded and well funded. He is the recipient of an NHMRC Project Grant, NSW Health Cadiovascular Research Grant and Centenary Institute Future Leader Fellowship.
