Dr Belamy Cheung was awarded PhD in the School of Women's and Children's Health, Medicine Faculty, University of New South Wales, Australia in 2004. Currently she is manager of Molecular Carcinogenesis Program at Children’s Cancer Institute, Lowy Cancer Research Centre, University of NSW. Dr Cheung have successfully obtained fellowship funding from Cancer Institute NSW, developed an independent research endeavour and publication track record, as well as played a key role in managing a large research team focusing on cellular mechanisms that contribute to tumour initiation and progression of cancer, as well as the development of novel therapeutics for treatment of neuroblastoma and skin cancer. More recently, Dr Cheung is working with a PhD student Selena Sutton to identify a novel small molecule, SE012, which has synergistic cytopathic effects with the BRAF inhibitor, vemurafenib, in melanoma cells with wild-type BRAF. This work offers the exciting possibility of a therapeutic for melanoma patients who currently have no treatment alternative. Dr Cheung is also working closely with another postdoc and former PhD student, Dr Patrick Kim, to define novel small molecules which synergistically enhance the anticancer activity of histone deacetylase inhibitor, vorinostat.
