Overview:

This interactive workshop/presentation is designed for registered nurses practising in diverse care settings including; acute care, chronic care, community health care, Nurse practitioners, nurse educators and academics, health care managers and administrators in health care settings. It will provide a guide to help nurses and other health care professionals to understand and develop skills in cultural ??re assessments and work through some of the challenges that nurses face in clinical practice and to prevent cultural clashes and stereotyping.

Specific transcultural nursing concepts will be discussed to create an opportunity for reflection upon nursing practices and positive thinking towards promoting culturally meaningful, appropriate, competent and congruent care for individuals, groups, families as well as culturally competent organizations.

The workshop will enable participants to reflect upon their own nursing practices beyond cultural sensitivity to cultural awareness. Skills such as cultural accommodation, cultural preservation and re-patterning practices in complex care situations will be examined. Consideration will be given as to how to promote culturally appropriate care, taking into account the multiple cultural systems and domains including: the culture of the healthcare system; culture of the health care setting; the cultural care values of the client and the community and beliefs of the health care practitioner/namely the nurse, as provider of care without undermining the parties involved in Cultural Care Assessment.

Upon completion of this workshop, you will have had the opportunity to:

  • Critically examine the interface between the individual, culture, health and the environmental context;
  • Understand the importance of Cultural-care knowledge in planning care;
  • Critique various transcultural and cross-cultural assessment guides and their application to a range of nursing specialty practice/s;
  • Apply cultural-care assessments strategies to provide culturally appropriate, meaningful, congruent and competent care.
