Intro:
Turn off the power to the air conditioner at the outside disconnect or in the indoor breaker box. Remove the screws to the panel on the air conditioner. Verify with your multimeter that the power is off by setting the meter to "Voltage" and touching the probes of the meter to the line side of the contactor. This is where the 220-volt wire enters the air conditioner. The voltage should read zero. Further check that the power is off by pressing the button on the top of the contactor. Nothing should come on.(air condition spare parts)
Find the air condition capacitor inside the air conditioner. It will be a round or oval shaped shiny metal cylinder about two to four inches tall. There should be male spade-shaped wire terminals with wires connected to them coming out of the top.(air condition spare parts)
Examine the air condition capacitor for cracks or leaks. A dome-shaped bulging top will indicate that the capacitor is bad. If the top is domed, replace the air condition capacitor.(air condition spare parts)
Write down which colored wire goes to which terminal on the air condition capacitor. Touch the probes of your meter to all the terminals one at a time and to the ground wire to discharge any electricity in the air condition capacitor. Remove the wires from the capacitor terminals.(air condition spare parts)
Set your meter to measure capacitance and touch the probe to each terminal. If your v capacitor has three terminals, they will be marked "Fan," "C" and "Herm." If there are only two, they will not be marked. Read the side of the air condition capacitor to see what reading you should get. Example: 35 microfarads (mfd or uf) at 370 volts, plus or minus 5 percent. (air condition spare parts)
